Empowering Women Advocates through Mental Health Awareness Workshop
At Balay Alima Women’s Haven Inc. (BAWHI), we understand that true empowerment encompasses not only physical safety and legal support but also emotional and psychological well-being. Recognizing the vital role of mental health in building resilient communities, BAWHI recently hosted a Mental Health Awareness Workshop tailored for our devoted women advocates. This essential event was facilitated by Loureine Canda, a mental health advocate and educator from Holy Name University, who generously volunteered her expertise and time to support our cause.
During the workshop, Loureine guided participants through fundamental concepts in mental health, such as identifying symptoms of common mental health challenges like anxiety, depression, and burnout. Advocates engaged in interactive discussions that deepened their understanding of the personal and social dynamics that impact mental health, especially in the context of providing support to vulnerable women. The session provided valuable coping strategies, stress management techniques, and exercises for maintaining emotional well-being, essential tools for both personal resilience and effective advocacy.
The workshop emphasized the profound impact that awareness and compassion can have on individuals struggling with mental health issues. Participants were encouraged to cultivate openness and non-judgmental attitudes, creating a safe environment where women feel supported to share their mental health challenges. By understanding mental health and its implications, BAWHI’s advocates are better prepared to empower the women they serve, addressing not only immediate safety concerns but also helping them embark on journeys of holistic healing.
The importance of mental health awareness cannot be overstated. Mental health struggles often remain hidden due to stigma, leading many to suffer in silence. Initiatives like this workshop are vital in combating stigma, fostering understanding, and equipping our advocates with the resources to recognize and respond effectively to mental health needs. Just as physical health is essential to well-being, mental health is a cornerstone of resilience and personal growth, enabling individuals to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.
We extend our deepest gratitude to Loureine Canda for her selfless dedication and to all the women advocates who participated. Through this workshop, they have taken another significant step toward making a positive difference in the lives of those they serve. BAWHI remains committed to nurturing a compassionate, informed community where mental health is respected and supported, helping each woman who comes through our doors find strength, peace, and hope.
